You can’t get fitter than a Tardis Fitter.

Quite often, our clients on site, take delivery of a water or waste tank and then say, now we’ve got to fit it…

Unloading the tools and fittings for another fitting job

Right said Sam…

That’s when we tell them, we’ve an experienced team in place for just that.

For site based plumbing and electricals, we’ve trained, experienced people to provide the service to get you operational.

We realise that not all the items on hire from Tardis are simply plug and play. A single portable shower for example, which needs power supply, water supply and drainage arranging.  Then there’s the initial set up of site welfare cabins and toilet blocks.

A couple of weeks ago, we were out in the pouring rain (what did we say about Tardis fitters, unstoppable)?  A two storey welfare and admin block which required hooking up to water in waste out.

As it was a brand new site, there were probably more Tardis bods than site folk that morning.  Firstly, our crane lorry arrived with the much needed tanks.

The waste tank is buried to improve gravity feed

Waste tank is buried

Shortly after, the Tardis fitters who were briefed by the site personnel as to where everything had to be placed.

The waste tank was buried up to its inspection ports at the rear of the block and the water tank sited just round the other side.

The water tank is sited and filled with clean water

While the waste tank was being connected to the cabins, the Tardis H2O on site water tanker arrived and filled the water tank with 5000 litres of clean water for hand washing and toilet flushing purposes.

Once the waste tank was ready for duty, the Tardis crew set about plumbing in the water tank.

Tardis Pump Protection Box

The all important pump protection box housing an electric on-demand pump

An electric on-demand pump was put into the water line, to provide water pressure to the cabin.  This was put inside one of our now famous pump protection boxes, someone thinking ahead to the chilly days a few weeks away.

These custom-made boxes provide weather proofing protection from wind, rain and of course frosty conditions, they really are a must for site based installations.

So, despite everyone being ankle deep in rust coloured mud, the job was completed in a working day and left ready for occupancy by the site staff.

A hot toddy and feet soaked in a hot bowl of Radox and the fitters were ready for more of the same.

As they say, you can’t get fitter than a Tardis Fitter…

A quick look at new bowser products from Tardis

Here’s a pretty innovative piece of equipment perfect for site work.  A self-contained pressure washer with 1125 litre water bowser EU highway approved.

1125 litre self contained pressure washer

That’s an important consideration where vessels such as these are concerned, because there are legalities connected with bowser towing.

Basic considerations for towing

Highway approved bowsers have their own braking system for example and provided the towing vehicle is to the correct specification, the bowser can be towed in a filled condition.  Many people underestimate the weight of even 500 gallons of fluid towed behind a vehicle and how it will affect the vehicle’s manoeuvrability and performance.

Before hitching any type of trailer vehicle, you should consider the following:

Do you have the correct driving licence allowing you to tow the size and weight of the trailer?

Does the towing specification of your vehicle complement that of the trailer you are towing (the manufacturer’s handbook will verify this). also take into consideration the tyres on both trailer and vehicle and the terrain you will be encountering.

Tardis towable clean water bowser

This bowser for example can’t be legally towed on the road in a full condition, but can be towed on site like shown here. Note the tyres are suitable for site conditions

If the item carries liquid, you must ensure you meet transport and safety regulations for that type of fluid especially where fuels such as Diesel or Kerosene are concerned.

Our pressure washer bowser is based upon a T bar frame mounted on an Avonride rubber torsion axle.  It comes with standard road (van) tyres, but where custom builds are concerned, town and country tyres may also be specified.

The tank is an elliptical Polyethylene moulded construction which is baffled and included an 18” lockable outer hinged lid.

The pressure washer is powered by a Yanmar electrically activated L100 ten horse power engine driving a 200 bar 15 litres per minute piston pump.  There is a hand lance and 7 metres of hose stowed on a bracket.

The coupling is a Knott – Avonride auto reverse, with either 40km eye or 50mm ball break away cable and parking brake lever.

Dimensions are as follows: 1.55 metres Wide x 3.45 metres Long x 1.3 metres High

Unladen weight: 385 Kg  Max laden weight: 1500 Kg Towing height (level) 400 mm

A specification sheet can be downloaded here and a range of bunded bowsers can be viewed:

http://www.tardishire.co.uk/index.php/water_bowsers/27

Diesel bowsers are a boon for site work where frequent top ups of power tools and plant is required.

2140 bunded diesel bowser

2140 litre bunded diesel bowser. Other sizes are available in the range

Available in a range of tank sizes, the bowsers are mounted on an A frame drawbar. Towing connection is by a 2” forged, welded ring eye.

The outer bund tank is of a cylindrical steel construction, containing the inner tank which is of translucent heavy duty Polyethylene with 2” filler caps and vent valve.

Fuel is pumped from the bowser tank via a rotary hand pump with 15 feet of 1” hose and complete with a trigger nozzle stowed on a bracket with Y strainer. The assembly is contained inside the lockable bund compartment.

Dimensions for the 2140 litre variant are: 1.8 metres Wide x 3.7 metres Long x 1.9 metres high.

For the 950 litre model, they are: 1.4 metres Wide x 3.1 metres Long x 1.5 metres High.

We’re introducing other capacity models to our range and will be promoting these soon.

Tardis also carried a range of plant items ideal for site work which includes on demand, electric and petrol driven pumps and generators.

Back to the Future with Tardis Environmental

Today is the day! In Back to the Future in which Marty McFly travelled to the future to today. With it being 30 years since the film was released, here at Tardis Environmental we decided to look back and see how things have changed.

In the last 30 years there has been many improvements from the international drinking water supply and sanitation decade also known as the first water decade, which took place between the years 1981- 1990. This was due to the worlds needs for basic sanitation services for example drinking water and waste water disposal. Fast forward to today where even here at Tardis Environmental we can supply clean and potable bulk water across the UK. Here is a picture of one of our water tankers. For more information about our bulk water tankers please go to our website by clicking here.

As well as drinking water sanitation that has improved throughout the years also, portable toilets have improved drastically over the years. From the first portable toilets being made of wood and metal and they were too heavy to transport as well as not being very hygienic. Then in the early 1970’s when fibre glass was introduced to be used for portable toilets, however due to the material the portable toilets still absorbed odours. In the mid – 1970’s polyethylene portable toilets were introduced they are light weight, durable and still the most common material for portable toilets today. The need for portable toilets is still needed for a variety of reasons from construction sites to events. Here at Tardis Environmental we have a range of portable toilets to suit your needs, click here for more information on our portable toilets.

What do you think will change in the next 30 years as we are excited to find out and for more information about the services we offer here at Tardis Environmental please go to our website by clicking here or calling 0800 731 0589.

Water testing, simple isn’t it?

Clean water is something we take very much for granted in our modern daily lives, but if you give it some thought, a lot of effort goes in to supplying water in volume, that is fit to drink.

You only have to take the recent mayhem caused when Cryptosporidium was discovered in the north west’s United Utilities water supply which required people to boil their drinking water.

Water is complicated stuff, it does after all support life. Fish absorb oxygen from their surroundings. Work your way down the microscopic scale and you’ll find a whole spectrum of odd and unusual creatures that live out their lives in water.

Water sampling

Some are harmful to us if consumed, which is why our drinking water is treated to make it fit for purpose. That fitness for purpose is of course only up to the point of delivery, usually your tap.

If not stored correctly, water can easily spoil just like milk or perishable food.

In large quantities, it is not always practical to keep water refrigerated (one method to stall the development of harmful bacteria).

Water bowsers offer the next best storage alternative, especially if they are approved drinking water vessels and employ WRAS fittings are pre-treated prior to filling and securely closed to preserve the integrity of the water inside.

Providing these conditions are followed you can store drinking water safely for 48 hours and then you need to test it for its fitness for purpose (drinking).

Since we launched our sister website, H2O on site water services earlier in the year, we’ve become pretty busy testing and reporting on water quality.

As well as bowsers, drinking water is often stored in larger vessels such as tankers or even pillow tanks.

Our standard test encompasses the following: Bacteria, Nitrate, Nitrite, Hydrogen sulphide, Sulphate, Total hardness, Total alkalinity, Total chlorine, free chlorine, Chloride, copper, iron, exact PH level, exact temperature. Coliforms and E coli. Quite a list isn’t it?

We also check fixtures and fittings for damage or potential contamination. Inlets and outlets of vessels containing water to be tested are sanitised prior to the test being taken to reduce to “negligible” the risk of cross contamination.

Testing is specifically colour based, with the colour of the sample compared to the calibrated test sheets, calibrated we hear you ask?

Water testing sample

Imagine you have a sheet of card which has colours of test variants printed on it. You’ve been using it a long time. You’ve left it out in the sun a few times. The sunlight has bleached the page slightly.

The colours of your test sheet are no longer a fair comparison.

So, rather like everything else in the clever world of quality control, comparison sheets are in turn compared against a master sheet (calibrated to national standards) and certified as a true match to a specific colour result. The sheet is known as a “correct colour chart“.

Coliforms and E coli tests are a little more involved. A strict sampling procedure is followed to prevent accidental contamination. Samples are incubated at a constant (calibrated) 35 degrees for 24 hours before the test is conducted.

Portable water testing lab

If the sample (which was yellow) is green or blue, those yukky little Coliforms are present.

Testing for E coli involves viewing the sample under UV light (again a measured wavelength or approximately 365mm) Zero fluorescence means no E coli, blue fluorescence indicates the little varmints be there.

Water contaminating E coli must be chlorinated using a set procedure and measure of chlorine, then neutralised to make the water safe for emptying into a public drain.

That’s environmental care. Putting harmless but non potable water back into a biological environment where it will eventually be treated at the water works, once again to be safely delivered fit for drinking to taps and outlets.

Vessels which contained the contaminated water, must be treated and flushed to ensure the contamination is neutralised before being used for drinking water purposes again.

The search for happiness, hydration and health

How much drinking water do we need per day? Good question.

Tardis H2o has the answer.

We all know that good hydration is essential for our health and wellbeing, considering that 70% of the human body is made up of water.

We at Tardis H2o on site are often asked how much drinking water a person needs to maintain a healthy demeanor. The answer is dependent on a number of factors. One of the factors is physical build, a person’s physical activity and the weather can make a difference. A hot humid environment for instance would make you lose valuable fluids through perspiration.

We should take note of what our bodies are trying to tell us and the first signs of dehydration can include a dry mouth, lightheadedness and fatigue. In its extremes chronic dehydration can effect body functions such as the kidneys and lead to muscle damaged.

This is why you will often see during large music festivals, events and even raves, people drinking copious quantities of good old H2o. Water really is the best cure.

In situations such as this the worst thing to do would be drink alcohol which would add to the dehydrative effect.

When you are responsible for a gathering where people may be at risk of dehydration there are a number of options open to provide what people need.

Probably the simplest is bottled drinking water because of its self-contained ease of use. For outdoor events you may consider using a specially prepared drinking water bowser. When we say specially prepared we mean that the vessel and the water it contains meet strict guidelines laid out by the Health and Safety Executive and the Drinking Water Inspectorate. Also fittings such as taps and connectors must be WRAS approved (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme).

Drinking Water Station

Storage of drinking water is also strictly regulated and must not exceed 48 hours in a tamperproof vessel without testing for E-coli as a minimum. Tests should also be carried out every 48 hours afterwards to assure that the water is fit for purpose (drinking).

Water testing

Taking into consideration these factors, a rough guide as to how much a person should drink to maintain hydration, 2 litres per day (approximately half a gallon) is the amount advised.

http://authoritynutrition.com/how-much-water-should-you-drink-per-day/

However one should take into account the physiology of the individual. There are no hard and fast rules, just general advice.

The body has many mechanisms for alerting an individual to its needs; thirst being one of them in this case. Taking into consideration what has been said thus far, you can begin to calculate the amount of wholesome drinking water you will need to keep people happy, healthy and hydrated with an idea of how you will store it too.

Moving to the extreme, Tardis H2o on site have provided a tanker filled with 16,000 litres of drinking water and a special dispensing station in recent weeks though our maximum current capacity is a whopping 32,000 litres, enough to swim in let alone drink.

If you have to provide wholesome drinking water, talk to Tardis H2o on site and get the very best advice and service.

Lancashire drinking water supply

You may have seen in the news the warnings issued by United Utilities about drinking water safety in the north west of England, affecting areas including Blackpool, Preston, Chorley and other surrounding districts, when the bug cryptosporidium was detected in drinking water last week.

Stand pipesThe official advice from the water authorities has been to boil water before drinking which is good advice for any water stored under uncontrolled conditions.

Water testing

Tardis Environmental stepped into the breach with emergency drinking water deliveries, one tanker into Blackpool due as we write.

Tardis H2o offers water delivery service

Our ever-expanding fleet of water tanks and water tankers covers almost every water delivery service option available.

Britain will hopefully receive some hot weather this year. And with hot weather, this could also mean a reduced amount of rainfall. Although a hot British summer is great for the rest of us, it’s not ideal for farming, seeding and grassing as the soil will become drier.

That’s where Tardis H2o comes in – bulk water can be supplied for such services as seeding and grassing across the UK.

Tardis H2o Water Delivery Service

Tardis H2o Water Delivery Service

We can supply a bulk water delivery service to be used in seeding and grassing in areas such as the following:

Water for Irrigation

There are many uses of water that we may not consider as often as others. Today’s blog topic is based on water for irrigation. Tardis Environmental offer bulk water that is an ideal irrigation water supply.

With the British summer just around the corner, the weather hopefully warming up and a possible dry season upon us, water will be needed for agriculture, farming and landscaping sectors alike.

Irrigation in particular, is referred to as the artificial application of water to the land or soil. The water solutions we offer allow us to provide water for irrigation services to your site.

With our expanding fleet of tanks and tankers, it makes delivery of bulk water for irrigation a simple task. If you already have a water tank on site, we can fill this for you. Our new 16,000 litre clean water tanker is ideal for anywhere a supply of bulk water is needed including wash downs, soakaway tests and event water. The new tanker is also rear wheel drive making it easier to manoeuvre in more difficult locations.

Dust suppression bowser – new video!

We’ve recently shot some new video footage of our dust suppression bowser in action before it went out on hire.

The video below, features a dust suppression bowser being towed around our Walsall site. The bowsers are fabricated by Tardis and are available for both hire and sale.

Dust suppression bowser stats:

  • 4 metres long, 2 metres wide, 1.8 metres high
  • 2,000 litre / 500 gallon capacity

Dust suppression bowsers are commonly used in the construction or agricultural industry, on construction sites, renovation sites, demolition sites and quarries as an ideal choice to combat dust particles in the air. It works by damping down the particles, particularly important with summer approaching and possible dry weather.

Not only is dust hanging around in the air irritating, it can also be viewed as a risk to health. High levels of dust on construction sites has been identified by the Health and Safety Executive as a possible cause of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease of the lungs). This is because small dust particles remain in the air longer and if inhaled, can cause damage if they become lodged deeper into the lungs. By keeping dust to a minimum, you could be protecting your workforce and helping to keep them healthy.

Having a dust suppression bowser will help also help eliminate some of the dirt and dust from being trailed around other areas of the site, reducing the risk of contamination.

The bowser can be seen mounted on a trailer with land rover style wheels, allowing for easy transportation, even on rough terrain. The bowser is also fitted with a mounted petrol water pump.

For more information on a cost effective solution for dust control on your site, as well as the other water bowsers we offer, contact our friendly Tardis hire team today on 0800 731 0589.
