Septic tank emptying by Tardis

Although not as common as they may have been, many homes still rely on septic tanks, particularly in more rural areas.

If your property is not connected to a mains sewer, you may have a septic tank, where the sewage from the bathroom, toilet, shower or kitchen ends up.

A septic tank simply works like a smaller version of wastewater treatment works, as the sewage flows into the tank – its forms 3 layers.

  • First layer – scum or crud. This layer sits on the top of the tank, and will not decompose naturally. More about this later.
  • Second layer – wastewater is able to drain away out of an outlet pipe to a soakaway or drain field.
  • Third layer – the bottom layer of sludge is rather clever. It is allowed to settle on the bottom of the tank. This layer will be digested by bacteria that are breeding in the tank.

Alternatively, some properties have a cesspit or cesspool to hold wastewater and sewage. A cesspit tends to be above ground and has an opening hatch, whereas a septic tank is normally buried beneath the ground not far away from the property. A cesspit does not have an outlet pipe to a drain.

As mentioned above, the first layer within the tank does not decompose, and will need to be removed. To ensure the septic tank works properly, septic tank emptying should be carried out. Cesspits will also need to be emptied.

Ideally, septic tank emptying should be carried out on a regular basis. Exact frequency of emptying would depend on the size of the tank, how much waste it can hold and also the number of people living in the household, and therefore creating waste.

It is as equally important for low usage properties also to be emptied.

Septic Tank Emptying

Septic Tank Emptying

If septic tank emptying is not maintained, it can cause bad odours, flooding and also pollution, 3 things you definitely will not want.

Luckily, septic tank emptying is included under the array of services Tardis Environmental can offer across England, Wales and Scotland.

As a licensed waste carrier, you can be confident with the service we provide.

For properties where septic tank emptying is required more frequently, it may be a good idea to schedule it as part of a routine service. This would ensure tanks stay efficient, increasing their functional life, whilst also reducing the possibility of blocked drains and overflowing.

Tardis says it’s CHRISTMAAAASSSS !

It’s accepted we all like a good rest at Christmas and a mince pie or two, but gremlins never rest and someone has to be on call to deal with them.

Although the Tardis crew will be putting up their Christmas stockings hoping for everything they deserve, the operation is a 365 day a year affair and we will be available for emergency call out.

The same number as usual and the same level of service applies.

one number

We really hope you won’t need us, but we’ll be there if you do.

Thanks for being with us through 2014 and for following our blog, Twitter feed and Facebook page.

We really enjoyed your pictures of Tardis toilets and tankers you spotted out on location, even on the telly. Keep sending them in and we’ll keep featuring them. For meritorious contributions, we have been know to post out some Tardis goodies as reward, so just keep that in mind.

We plan to continue running humorous features and expanding our instructional videos like our recent Crossrail compliant video, which was very well received.

And of course, when the occasion rises, we’ll be dressing up rather like we did in our onesies for Children in need and our wooly pullies for Save the Children.

Septic Tank Emptying – Tardis goes through the motions

This is an operation best carried out than talked about, but we thought you might like to learn a little more about what goes on where angels fear to tread yet Tardis operatives work their magic every day.

Even in 2014, there are still a lot of homes and commercial premises which do not have mains sewage and waste disposal.

This everyday activity has to go somewhere and more likely than not, the property will be connected to a septic tank or cess pit.

You may wonder what the difference is. Well, they both hold waste water and the unmentionable stuff, but the main difference is a cess pit or pool has no access hatch and is normally sited above ground.

 septic tank and drain field

A septic tank is installed underground and for various reasons such as hygiene and durability is made from plastic, which of course won’t rust or decompose.

Lurking away in the subterranean darkness, your storage has three distinct layers.

The top layer is known as crud and will not decompose naturally. It floats on top of the waste water and is a very good reason to have a tank emptied at least once a year even if it is a low use facility.

The waste water layer comes below that and can exit through a T shaped outlet to a drain field or soakaway which filters through to the naturally occurring ground water level or water table.

The third layer is the part we’ll be less descriptive about just use your imagination.

A lot goes on in your septic tank once you’ve flushed goodbye…

Bacterial action breaks down solids into a mush. The planet as a whole is dependent on these little fellows, the circle of life and all that.

Because it’s advisable to maintain the levels of bacteria working away in your waste facility, use biocides like domestic bleaches, antibacterial soaps and washing up liquids by all means to keep your kitchen and bathroom clean and healthy, but be mindful of the fact their antibacterial action will still be working once you’ve flushed it away.

As we said earlier, a low usage facility say in a domestic property will benefit from being emptied at least once a year.

Higher usage facilities such as businesses, schools, sport facilities obviously have a higher traffic flow of people disposing of washing water, showering and spending a penny and so, maintenance required will be more frequent.

Booking a Tardis service.  0800 731 0589 a free number to call nationwide.

You’ll find yourself speaking to one of our friendly knowledgeable team, trained to advise on a host of environmental services.

Provide us with some basic information such as how far the access to the tank is from road or driveway, the approximate size of your tank and we’ll arrange for one of our shiny yellow and green Tardis tankers to arrive on a scheduled day and leave you with a nicely serviced and emptied tank.

It’s important we establish your needs before the day, so we send you the right sized vehicle. Please tell us about any obstructions between the arrival point and the tank access. For example, we need to know if there is an incline, because this can alter the efficiency of the disposal rate.

Is the hatch or access to the tank straightforward ? not locked or obscured by shrubbery or brambles for example. If we know all this in advance, the operation is sure to go with military precision.

Vacuum Tanker

We use a combination of vacuum and jet vac tankers, which range from 1500 gallon capacity to a 6000 gallon vehicle to meet the smallest to largest disposal needs.

the big one

For your peace of mind, we’re a fully licensed waste carrier and our drivers are trained in all aspects of the job including correct Health & Safety procedures.

Flood Warning!

Need a Fast Response to Flooding!

If you’re in a high-risk flood area, then Tardis Environmental can help weather you’re a domestic or construction customer.

Flooded Car Park

The met office has issued out warnings and alerts for known areas that are at risk of flooding. So what can we do to help prevent or even minimize damage caused by flooding?

We have a large fleet of vacuum tankers that can take large amounts of wet wastewater to help alleviate possible damage caused be flooding. Some of our tankers can also have a high vol jet vac that can clean your drains from leafs and debris that may slow the rate the floodwater gets drained.

Tardis Environmental also has industrial water pumps that can move the wastewater from a flooded area to a drain or river that is not flooded.

The WX10 and WH20 water pumps are useful for small jobs like filling small water tanks and increasing water pressure.

The WB20 and WB30 are great for moving large amounts of water with small debris within the water.

Now the WT20 is probably the best bet to move waste water as it can handle large amounts of water and large sized debris up to 24mm.

If you need any help in a bad situation then give our team a call today and see how we can help you. Freephone 0800 731 0589.
