Septic Tank Empty

All you need to know about septic tank emptying

Septic tanks are mainly found in areas where a mains sewage line is not available and the sewage and waste water needs to be collected in a septic tank before being released in ground water.

Domestic Septic Tank

You are probably thinking why I would need a septic tank emptying service if the water gets released back in to the ground water level. The Septic tank has 3 layers of waste water, the bottom layer of water is called the sludge layer and this will be eaten by helpful bacteria. This is solid waste that drops to the bottom of the septic tank. So try not to use too much bleach or antibacterial products. Also if you do not empty the sludge from the bottom of the septic tank the sludge layer will build up as the bacteria will not be able to handle the increased sludge.

The second layer or the middle layer of waste water inside a septic tank is called waste water. This layer is the layer that will exit through a T-shaped outlet pipe to a drain field or soakaway field, which will then soak through the soil back to the ground water flow for further treatment.

The first layer otherwise known as the scum layer is a build-up of oil and grease and items that don’t decompose. This layer sits on top of the waste water layer and is the most common problem cause for blocking up your septic tank.

So having a scheduled septic tank empty not only saves you money but will give you peace of mind. Plus have a septic tank empty service will help prolong the life of your sewage system.

If you need more advice or information on septic tank emptying then give our Hire desk team a call today on 0800 731 0589.

Why do we need a Septic tank empty?

Septic Tank Info

Septic Tank Emptying

The most important thing in a septic tanks life is having a regular septic tank emptying service. Why is this so important for a septic tank? Having your tank emptied at least once a year will mean your tank should not overflow under normal use. If you find that you are having your septic tank emptied on a more frequent basis then there could be a problem.

Problems that could occur with a septic tank!

There are so many things that could go wrong if you don’t have a scheduled empty. So what could cause your septic tank to overflow? First of check the size of the septic tank, if you have a 3 man tank and you have 5 people living at your address then you are over using the tank. If you have checked the size and found that you have the right size tank then it’s time to call Tardis who will empty your septic tank and if requested give a wash down.

How can you prolong the life of your tank?

There are a number of ways in which to help prolong the life of your sewage tank. First of don’t pour antibacterial chemicals down your kitchen sink as the antibacterial liquid could kill all the friendly bacteria that sits at the bottom of your tank that digests all the sludge, killing this bacteria will mean a build-up in sludge which could clog your drain pipes and could lead to having them need a high pressure jetting service to remove the blockage.  Other things to look out for tree roots breaking in through the side of the tank, if dealt with early the tank will more likely be fixed instead of having a completely new one installed.

So remember always have your septic tank emptied on a regular basis and don’t put too much antibacterial down your kitchen.

Building a New Septic Tank?

Want some Advice on Septic tanks

When installing a new septic tank you must make sure you install the septic tank at least 15m from your home and within 10m of a vehicle access point. This makes it easy for us to perform a septic tank emptying service as access to the chamber will be easy. Do not build on a slope as the septic tanks drain field could be releasing the waste water to the adjoining landowner.

What should a new septic tank come with?

The tank should have at least two chambers, which will need to operate in series. All materials used to help assembly the tank should be able to prevent leaking and ingress of subsoil water. The tank itself must be made from suitable material and be sound in structure. Most tanks will have a BBA certificate. It is also easy to forget when installing pipe work to make it easy to access, this makes jobs like desludging and drain repairs a lot cheaper if anything were to happen.

But before you go and install a septic tank you must make sure the drainfield is able to soak up the water. To test the area in which you want the drainfield to be you must do a soakaway test; this is where we would come with either a towable bowser or our massive 6,000 gallon tanker. This really depends on the size of the drainfield which is normally calculated is the number of people living in the property or the number of people at the site. The soakaway test is where fresh clean water is poured into the ground where it is timed to see how fast the water is soaked up. If the water takes too long to drain away or does not drain at all then you will not be allowed to build the drainfield there.

Don’t worry if the water does not drain away fast enough or at all, there are solutions. The main cause for water to drain slowly or not at all is there could be a layer of clay under the soil. You can get the soil check to see how big the layer of clay is. There are some solutions for clay but I would recommend finding a different spot.

When you have your new septic tank installed remember to have at least one septic tank empty a year. Tardis Environmental can provide a scheduled septic tank emptying service.

If you need more information about our soakaway service and Septic tank emptying service call 0800 731 0589

What is a Soakaway?

Information on Soakaway test

In April 2002 a surface water soakaway design was introduced, this was to ensure that storm water soaks away effective.

Don’t think you need a soakaway! Building Regulation H3 Says,

‘The requirements of H3 will be met if rainwater soaking into the ground is distributed sufficiently so that it does not damage foundations of the proposed building or any adjacent structures’.

The H3 Regulation guidance note outlines suitable arrangements for domestic type soakaways only, and it should not be taken as a definitive guide. For more detailed guidance refer to the aforementioned document.

So what is the function of a soakaway?

A Soakaway must be able to immediately store storm-water or heavy rain to runoff and allow the water’s efficient infiltration into the adjacent soil. The time it takes for the water to soakaway will determine the size of the soakaway required.

This is where our Towable Bowser or bulk water H2O Tankers can help in hot conditions like summer where rain might not come for a few weeks (This is Britain but even we have sunny spells). We can supply Clean Water (None Drinking) from 500 all the way up to 6,000 gallons.

For more information on how Tardis Environmental can help you perform a soakaway test call 0800 731 0589 or visit our website for more details.

Mains Portable Toilet

Information on Mains Portable Toilet

The Mains Portable toilet is great anywhere like a construction site or even at a domestic property.  You can even have hot running water from the sink inside the portable toilet via an electrical point.

So what are the standard features of a Mains Portable Toilet?

  • Hidden cistern with integrated soap tray
  • 15ml cold/fresh water connection and 100ml waste pipe connection
  • Full plastic floor
  • Simple maintenance and cleaning
  • Porcelain WC bowl
  • Porcelain Toilet

If you have already hired or in the process of hiring some Mains portable toilets then  here are some benefits to  having a mains toilet over the normal portable loos.

  • Hot water units with 3 kW infrared water heaters
  • Motion sensor for 20 seconds of water flow
  • 16 A power sockets fitted to cabin exterior
  • Waterproof fuse box
  • Waterproof switch
  • Built-in light

Don’t worry if you do not have a mains sewage pipe but still want to be able to have a hot water supply then you can hire out the hot wash portable toilet. The Hot wash will still need a power supply. All or portable toilets, urinals and showers have a spec sheet that can be downloaded from the website in the portable toilet section.

Septic tanks and Tankers

Septic tank and the types of waste a Vacuum tanker can take!

When you have a full waste tank or septic tank you will need to have a septic tank emptying service or waste removal service. Septic tanks normally have sewage or waste water inside them with minimal debris. This waste can be collected by a vacuum tanker, which is only designed to handle wet waste with minimum debris.

If you find that waste tank you have has more solid to liquid then you will need what is called a disab tanker. These tankers are specially designed to be able to handle dry waste, with their greater suction ability. They are also known as liquid ring tankers.

Septic Tank Emptying

How do you know if you need a vacuum tanker or a disab tanker?

First thing is to check the waste that is located within the septic tank. If there is a lot of liquid and it moves round like normal water, then you will probably need a normal vacuum tanker. If you find that the waste within the septic tank is very dry and solid (like wet sand) then you will probably need a disab tanker.  It is important to try and establish this before you ask for a normal septic tank emptying service as you will get charged for the wrong tanker.

You can get tanks that help separate the water from the solid debris into different layers. These are normally called silt tanks. They work by allowing the grit and sand to settle at the bottom of the tank which then allows the water to sit on top for easy suction and emptying.

If you are still not sure about the septic tank waste then you can request a call out service, this is where we will send out our experts who will check the waste and will be able to give you an accurate estimate on what tanker you will need to perform the service.

Tardis Environmental can provide both services nationwide. Call today and speak to our highly trained hire desk team who will help you get the right service for you.

Portable toilets queue saving tip

Don’t have massive queues for the Event Portable Toilets

When you have an event the last thing you want are your customers spending too much time queuing up to use the portable toilets. If your customers are spending more time queuing to use the portable toilets than enjoying the event or festival, then your customers will not have great time at your event or festival.

Urinal 6 Bay

So what solutions are there!

First you could hire out more toilets to accommodate the increase in customers. Secondly you could hire out some portable urinals. You can have portable urinals come in 4 or 6 bay styles. This will dramatically decrease the queuing times and help keep your customers happy.

If you are serving alcohol then it would be wise to add more portable toilets as the need will be greater.

If the percentage of women in attendance increases, increase the number of units by that percentage. If you still get people queuing to use the toilets the recommended maximum acceptable waiting line is 10 people.

If you need help organising event sanitation then give our highly informed hire desk team a call, who can answer your questions and help advice you on the correct number of portable toilets you will need for your event or festival. Freephone 0800 731 0589.
