Glastonbury spells the end for the Tardis Toilet ?

Tardis portable toilets

The eponymous Tardis toilet

There’s been a lot in the media of late about Glastonbury, the world’s biggest music festival. One story which caught our attention was the decision of the organisers to stop using the traditional “tardis” loo in favour of greener and more organic sanitation.

To clarify, Tardis Environmental hasn’t broken its longstanding relationship with Glastonbury’s organisers, in fact the week before last, we were there delivering waste tanks to the site, which many of the toilets and shower units drain into.

glasto delivery.jpg

A lottry load of Tardis waste tanks arrives at Glastonbury

Like any responsible organiser who’s activities make an environmental impact, Glastonbury are employing methods in many of its areas of operation to minimise the environmental impact on the land where the festival takes place each year.

We’ve supplied Tardis loos for 25 years

We were amused and somewhat flattered, when even Chris Evans on the radio referred to the toilets on the site as Tardis toilets, nice to think the item on which our company was founded 25 years ago is becoming as familiar a term as something say “Hoover”.

Here come the facts…

There will still be 5000 toilets on the Glastonbury fields including more than 700 metres of urinals they’ve even got these for ladies now, we kid you not.

As you know, we’re in the business of disposing “the business” nationwide 365 days a year, so our methods are ethical and legal and well documented.

Here’s a link to how we go about it around the land, showing how it is all disposed of at authorised STWs (Sewage Treatment Works) all controlled by electronic fob ID, the waste measured graded and properly processed.

The first Glastonbury festival took place in 1970 and was headlined by T Rex (which many of our readers will be too young to remember but Keith says were great as he saw them live in 1974).

All residents in the nearby village of Pilton get a free ticket to the festival.

1987 was the year of the trouser thieves. Hundreds of pairs stolen from tents and their pockets picked by miscreants.  Next day, the site was awash with trouserless people, though later the garments were found discarded in a muddy ditch.

In 1987, 2,485 miles of toilet paper was on site which is enough to stretch from London to Baghdad, though attendees had other uses for it.

The now famous pyramid stage made its debut in 1981 and originally was constructed from telegraph poles and corrugated metal. The rest of the year, it doubled as a cow shed.

This year’s line up includes: Adele, Coldplay, Jeff Lynn’s ELO, New Order, ZZ Top who only Keith in the Tardis office knew !  Art Garfunkel and many others who he’d not heard of.

Unlike the good folk of Pilton, us Tardis bods did not get free tickets, so we’ll be watching it at home on telly with a bottle of Tizer or two.

If you’re amongst the lucky ones to be there, send us some pics.

Who’s going to Glastonbury ? Tardis is !

Waste tanks for Glastonbury

It’s a logistical nightmare to prepare a well organised festival for 175,000+ revelers, caterers and musicians alike.

We’ve been there before, got the T shirt and we’re there again this year.

A total of 45 waste tanks 600 gallon capacity some of which you can see being delivered by big yellow and green Tardis lorry.

Tardis delivers to Glastonbury 2015

Waste tanks for Glastonbury

The festival’s come a long way since 1970 when 1,500 people paid a pound a head to see T Rex. Now, it’s part of the nation’s summer events calendar.

job done

Another load delivered

Here’s some facts and figures from 2014.

5,000 loos on site

700 metres of male urinals

£ 210.00 the cost of a standard ticket (a bit more than seeing T Rex).

3 million litres of water will be consumed and that’s just from the taps provided. Bottled water will make the figure double.

1,300 recycling volunteers cleaning up the mess.

400 cows who live on the site normally are moved out of harm’s way for the festival duration

You’re not allowed to wee in the bushes. The organisers have patrolling officers looking for offenders.

Of course, this is where Tardis Hire and our waste tanks come in.

Your checklist to ensure a perfect hire – Tardis helps you plan

rainbow

Whether you are putting a portable toilet in your garden or several into a field for a festival, sports meeting whatever, you’ll need to plan beyond just placing your order.

Tardis Environmental take good service very seriously, but there are factors known only to you, which can detrimentally affect what should be the smooth hiring of a portable toilet or shower.

Delivery vehicles.

Tardis Toilet Carrier Van Graphics 005-smaller July 2012

We deliver using the most appropriate vehicle for the run that day, this can be a 3.5 tonne 7 tonne or 7 tonne with trailer which is also commensurate with the number of units ordered.

Siting the unit(s).

Units need to be sited where we can conveniently drop off, collect and where required, service them too. If the delivery site is a domestic property, we need access for the vehicle to drop the unit close to where you intend it to be used.

For servicing, our smaller vehicles carry approximately 5 metres of hose. Vacuum tankers approximately 30 metres. Again, for further details on the weights and dimensions of our vehicles, peruse the specification sheets below.

If there is a wall or similar instruction it may require a crane mounted vehicle to effect delivery (which can be arranged at extra cost).

If the vehicle has to travel down a driveway, take time to measure the width and either talk to our hire desk team or look over the dimensions of our service vehicles so you’re clear the vehicle will fit.

Once the unit is on terra firma, whilst our drivers are strapping fellows, there is a limit to how far a toilet or shower unit can be jostled before even the most herculean staff member expires. As one was heard to say recently, “me name’s Simpson not Samson” !

The British weather has a habit of turning inclement at a moment’s notice. This can render some sites inaccessible posing inadequate ground conditions for vehicles. This is especially relevant where we are delivering out in the countryside.

Safety and security

Although we appreciate this can be difficult, we do ask our clients to consider the location where the units are going to be sited especially when left overnight or unattended. Consider the likelihood of them being damaged or stolen whilst in your care. Units are the responsibility of the client and good measures should be employed to prevent damage or theft.

Tardis cages

Added security for units when not in use

Tardis have security cages (lockable) to help protect the units (available at extra cost) an ounce of prevention being better than a pound of cure.

For larger events

Have you considered the number of toilets required in ratio to the number of people attending ?

We’ve many years of experience in providing adequate facilities for events and festivals. We can advise on the number of units you may need, even taking into consideration that people may be partying hard (drinking alcohol).

Tardis 6 bay urinal

Tardis 6 bay portable urinal

Take into consideration the male / female split of visitors and you can cut down loo queues, by hiring a combination of urinals for the lads and cubicle toilets for the ladies.

Connecting the units.

Tardis self-contained portable toilets do not need connection to any facilities but may require servicing if the hire period is more than a few days.

Tardis hot wash portable toilets require a 240 volt 16 amp connection to an electricity source. Showers require a water and electricity supply (rated at 240 volt 32 amp) and a run off for the waste water.

We have qualified fitters who can provide a connection service if required. Book this when you book your units.

What comes with the toilets ?

Toilets will be delivered with loo rolls and paper towels (where the unit features a sink) Alternatively there will be hand sanitiser gel.

If they should run out, then it is the hirer’s responsibility to replenish, unless this service has been pre booked, where we will take care of the resupply.

Collection after the event

We will endeavour to collect your units as soon as possible after your period of hire is over. In some cases however, it can be up to five working days, depending on your location with the good condition of the units being the client’s responsibility during this time.

Never wishing to scare our customers, 99 percent of unit hires go smoothly and without incident. A little forethought and good communication allows us to plan for just about any eventuality.

The Tardis hire desk team will help you set up your hire and our specification sheets help you take the worry out of those worrisome what -ifs.

Tardis says it’s CHRISTMAAAASSSS !

It’s accepted we all like a good rest at Christmas and a mince pie or two, but gremlins never rest and someone has to be on call to deal with them.

Although the Tardis crew will be putting up their Christmas stockings hoping for everything they deserve, the operation is a 365 day a year affair and we will be available for emergency call out.

The same number as usual and the same level of service applies.

one number

We really hope you won’t need us, but we’ll be there if you do.

Thanks for being with us through 2014 and for following our blog, Twitter feed and Facebook page.

We really enjoyed your pictures of Tardis toilets and tankers you spotted out on location, even on the telly. Keep sending them in and we’ll keep featuring them. For meritorious contributions, we have been know to post out some Tardis goodies as reward, so just keep that in mind.

We plan to continue running humorous features and expanding our instructional videos like our recent Crossrail compliant video, which was very well received.

And of course, when the occasion rises, we’ll be dressing up rather like we did in our onesies for Children in need and our wooly pullies for Save the Children.

Not all toilets are created equal

250tardis logo

At this time of year, everyone’s thoughts turn to parties and merriment.

We here at Tardis have found that big parties are often organised with no prior thought to shall we say “washroom requirements” leading to the ubiquitous loo queue and whilst people are in line waiting to spend a penny, they aren’t at the party having fun.

With that in mind, here’s the Tardis guide on how to relieve (literally) that problem at large gatherings.

Recommended for parties, weddings and the likes, have the hot wash or event toilet. Which as you might expect, does need a mains supply for the hot water. Elsewise, all the other functions are self-contained. The HSE compliant model even has a mirror so you can ensure you look your best when you exit.

All the necessities are provided, paper towels, liquid soap and silky soft tissue, you know what for…

We have a larger model for those with mobility issues, large enough to cater for a wheelchair and carer.

To cater for events where lads might outnumber lasses (stag nights, Rugby events) etc, we have urinals, 4 or 6 bay and we have also have demand for our ladies restroom (rose petals and attending cherubim an optional extra).

6 bay 2

Believe it or not, there’s a Tardis shower unit which does need power and mains water to keep it operational.

We find that most events can be amply catered for with these variants, but we will often be asked to crank things up a notch.

This is when our trailer based multiple bay luxury toilets come into play, for a touch of posh. Maybe a little large for your back garden, but perfect for post divot stamping at the polo match.

These units are finished to an exceptionally high standard and are often provided with attending personnel, a professional finishing touch.

Whatever the size of the party you’re catering for, even the hire of one portable unit can take the strain off your home facilities and keep your guests happy.

You can book your toilets and get an amazing amount of good advice from the experienced and friendly hire desk team. It’s one number nationwide

 one number

There are several factors to be considered because contrary to popular myth, our toilets don’t just materialise despite their nickname.

We deliver using medium sized commercial vehicles, often with a tail lift and the units are then jostled into place by our rugged muscular drivers.

Please do consider where you want to site your toilet unit, no lifting over walls, please, these things are heavy. Remember, they contain water and chemicals. In certain circumstances, a crane can be hired at extra cost.

Consider the access for our vehicle, will your path or driveway be wide enough? See the spec sheets for the vehicles we use and your questions will be answered.

We try to help you consider every possible snag with our spec sheets and for your convenience, the thumbnails below will open PDFs where dimensions, weights and the likes are given for each unit and vehicle.

 _THUMB-Tardis-Sheet-7.5-ton-Haulage-HGV THUMB-Tardis-Sheet-6-ton-Service-Truck THUMB-Tardis-Sheet-3.5-ton-Service-Truck

The information provided in these sheets and by our hire desk team take the mines out of the minefield. All you have to do, is arrange the time and date of delivery and collection and arrange to be there, we’ll do the rest.

As for calculating your number of people to units required ratio, we can advise on that and of course if the hire period is longer than a day or two, we will advise on your servicing periods to replenish the water and chemical solutions.

Now there’s been some noise made on social media on the fact our units are bigger on the inside. Unfortunately, we are unable to comment, you’ll just have to find out for yourselves.

Tardis Environmental UK Selects Paperless Technology

Transend To Help Tardis Environmental to go paperless!

TranSend  will enable Tardis to streamline its delivery and collection operation by building and optimising routes, recording job tickets and monitoring the progress of these routes and jobs in real time.  This includes electronic proof of delivery and collection, thereby eliminating lost job tickets and ensuring that drivers are carrying out jobs correctly. They will use the TranSend integrated route planning & job management application, running on Motorola TC55 Android devices with built-in scanners.

Tardis operates 60 vehicles covering wet waste collection, portable toilet hire, drainage services, water bowsers, waste tanks and road sweepers.  They pride themselves on excellence in service and offer a nationwide service with a 24 hour call out 7 days a week.

will be used to build and optimise routes based on job details to reduce mileage and better utilise driver time.  Drivers will download their allocated route for the day on their handheld device and then follow the prescribed process for deliveries and collections, including any special instructions, such as signatures and photographic evidence.

The TranSend solution provides a web-based back office management portal that will provide Tardis with complete visibility of routes and jobs in progress. Using GPS tracking from the driver’s handheld device, TranSend captures any events and exceptions that occur during the day and also manages driver compliance against their allocated route and jobs.
