Autumn “leaves” little to the imagination

1-leaf

Did we imagine that, just there out the corner of our eye, was that really a leaf falling from the trees already.  What happened to summer ?

Indeed, it was. The September song has begun, we’ll soon be wading through autumn’s golden gown unless there’s a Tardis road sweeper on the scene that is.

OK, so enough with the golden gown stuff…   Autumn leaves can and do cause problems especially when they get wet and start to decompose, making a gooey mulch that can be dangerously slippery on roads and paths and does a good job of blocking drains.

Luckily, our stalwart road sweeper fleet can take care of all kinds of debris that needs cleaning away. Leaves, mud litter.

We also have sweepers with a gully arm which can take care of blocked drains and manholes .

We sweep car parks, construction sites, quarry roads and entrances and of course streets and avenues where those pesky autumn leaves just keep piling up.

If you’re in need of a sweeper, then just call one free number nationwide, chat with us detailing your need and where you want us to appear and leave the rest to us.

Here’s a strictly autumnal little film showing one of our machines cleaning up, but of course we’re a 365 days a year operation in all aspects of our work.

Choosing the right tanker – waste removal

As with our previous post on hiring a portable toilet, there are also many questions to be asked when selecting the right tanker for waste removal!

Tardis operate a comprehensive fleet of vacuum tankers enabling us to service a broad range of wet waste removal requirements.

At Tardis, we like to know as much information as possible beforehand ensuring that waste removal can be completed efficiently with minimal disruption to your site, saving time for all those involved.

When initially assessing a location for a job – there are a few points to be considered.

Firstly, we would ask the description of the pit to be emptied and the location, taking time to consider if there is sufficient access for the vacuum tanker. It is important that there are no obstructions, including height restrictions such as overhead power lines.

Our range of smaller vacuum tankers allows us to service domestic properties with tight access, and our larger tankers enable us to remove waste in large volumes from larger sites.

Septic Tank Empty

Septic Tank Empty

You will also need to consider where the tanker can park in relation to the pit that is being emptied, what will the distance be? What is the depth of the pit? Our tankers carry at least 40 metres of hose, and can carry 100metres on request. All of these questions will enable us to select the right tanker.

The next point to be considered is what is waste is in the pit. Waste removal can include sewage, silt, oil and water etc. By letting us know what is in the pit to be emptied, we can send the right vacuum tanker. Let us know if it is hazardous waste disposal that you require.

The type of manhole cover over the pit should also be mentioned. Is the cover liftable by one person or will assistance be required?

Other questions we may ask include:

  • Is a pressure washer required?
  • Is confined space entry recommended to aid the removal of debris?
  • Is any breathing apparatus required for confined space entry?

The full site tanker survey can be viewed by clicking the link below.

We offer a wide range of waste removal services including septic tank emptying, cesspool emptying, manhole emptying, oil and water removal and more. For full details on our vacuum tanker fleet visit our website.

Don’t forget we also have a fleet of tankers for clean water and potable drinking water.

Remember, we are a 24/7/365 operation so if your caught out – give us a call.

Tardis says it’s CHRISTMAAAASSSS !

It’s accepted we all like a good rest at Christmas and a mince pie or two, but gremlins never rest and someone has to be on call to deal with them.

Although the Tardis crew will be putting up their Christmas stockings hoping for everything they deserve, the operation is a 365 day a year affair and we will be available for emergency call out.

The same number as usual and the same level of service applies.

We really hope you won’t need us, but we’ll be there if you do.

Thanks for being with us through 2014 and for following our blog, Twitter feed and Facebook page.

We really enjoyed your pictures of Tardis toilets and tankers you spotted out on location, even on the telly. Keep sending them in and we’ll keep featuring them. For meritorious contributions, we have been know to post out some Tardis goodies as reward, so just keep that in mind.

We plan to continue running humorous features and expanding our instructional videos like our recent Crossrail compliant video, which was very well received.

And of course, when the occasion rises, we’ll be dressing up rather like we did in our onesies for Children in need and our wooly pullies for Save the Children.

Tardis and the Crossrail project

Link

Crossrail, the largest engineering project in Europe and Tardis has been part of it.

In a nutshell, Crossrail is 73 miles of railway set to serve London and the south east, improving journey times and connecting with many existing lines.

As a supplier of goods and services to the project, Tardis Environmental have invested heavily in our fleet to make them “Crossrail compliant”. This includes the provision of safety equipment that is additional to the level we already send our vehicles to work carrying.

44tonne tanker

Fresnel lenses for example, smaller but similar to those found in lighthouses in this instance they are used to bend light allowing a driver to see personnel or cyclists approaching on the inside blind spot.

Side scan detection is now standard Crossrail  equipment, designed to detect cyclists or pedestrians in close proximity to the nearside.

In practice, audible tones or warnings exterior to the vehicle are triggered when the left hand indicator is activated and should there be a person detected in the field of the scan, the driver inside the cab is alerted by audible tone also.

Some side scan systems have the added safety of exterior cameras greatly reducing the chance of a mishap.

In addition, warning livery is added to the vehicle as are under run bars down each side.

Woe betide any contractor who fails to meet the high standards lain down by Crossrail. Exclusion from all sites and fines meted out often being the penalty.

Safety is in everyone’s interest. Our spec sheets detail our Crossrail compliant vehicles which of course can be used elsewhere, where stringent safety is practised.

Interceptor cleaning.

Unfortunately we’re not talking about that kind of interceptor.

Interceptors are a common drainage installation on many industrial sites and car parks throughout the UK. Interceptors are often referred to as oil catchers, oil and water tanks, wash down pits or oil water separators.

Prudent environmental management requires oil and petrol interceptors to be regularly maintained and inspected.

The build up of silt, debris and oil in underground interceptors and drainage systems increases the risk of flooding and potential pollution of watercourses or sewage systems. Regular cleaning and maintenance of these will significantly reduce your risk and should be part of your preventative maintenance programme.

Our fleet of vacuum tankers are perfectly suited to service any of these applications. Tardis Environmental are a fully licensed waste carrier with disposal facilities throughout the UK.

Full duty of care paperwork is available on request as are our sat nav tracked records showing the location of the ethical and legal disposal sites we use.

As for the nitty gritty, our tankers carry 40 metres of hose as standard. More can be requested on booking, should you believe your interceptor is an awkward distance from where the vehicle can park.

If in doubt, a tape measure and a chat to our friendly and experienced hire desk team will set you on the right track.

Read the signs – Tardis are recruiting

They’re all over the place. Stop signs, no parking signs and signs telling you to give way.

Did you know there’s a reason a Give Way sign is an inverted triangle, when all other information (rather than must obey) signs are the other way up?

The answer being, if the sign is obscured by snow or mud, from its shape alone, you still know it is a Give Way sign, Highway Code and all that.

Currently, there are other signs appearing on our roads, but these aren’t issued by the Department of Transport.

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey…

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey, but Tardis is out there sweeping all the leaves away.Screen Shot 2014-09-12 at 11.39.18

OK, maybe we’ll never hit number one in the charts, but we’re definitely tops at this time of year with the autumn leaf drop.

Yes, they may look pretty with their rich autumnal hues, but a concentration of leaves can cause all kinds of problems. Trains running late, leaves on the line being just one.

As leaves get wet or start to decompose, they block drains and can create a hazardous slippery surface on roads and pathways. Windy weather leaves fly around and can cause a hazard to driving.

Hazards are best dealt with pronto which is where Tardis steps into the breach.

We’re fully equipped nationwide to deal with road sweeping needs and we don’t just mean leaves. Car parks, construction sites, factory roads and perimeters, forecourts to cattle grids.   Anywhere where light debris needs to be cleared you’ll find Tardis road sweepers cleaning up.

Our road sweepers feature:

  • single and dual sweep operation
  • High pressure water jetting lances
  • High pressure street washing facility

A vehicle common to our fleet is the Johnsons VT650 an 18 tonne gross weight machine which carries a pressure lance, two drain keys, one hydrant, an overhead boom arm 2 x safety warning road signs and a mounted pressure washer making it multi skilled to meet many challenges.

You can view and download the spec sheet for this machine by clicking here

As you’d expect from a leading operator in the business, all Tardis operatives will be equipped with the correct safety equipment as well as being fully trained in operational and safety aspects of the job at hand.

Your first step in arranging a clean sweep service is to call our friendly and experienced hire team on 0800 731 0589

One of the team will establish your needs such as time, place, period the machine is required to work over.

Please do take into account what you are asking us to dispose of. Recently a client failed to tell us of a large oil spill on a site. This is something that has to be dealt with in a different way environmentally to regular debris and the job could not proceed.

Worse still, the job attracted an aborted mission fee, which we hate having to apply. If you’re at all unsure about the conditions of the area that needs cleaning, please talk to us first.

Detritus is an all year problem made worse at this time of year by the annual leaf drop. So, when you’ve gathered up all your conkers, call Tardis who’ll breeze in and clean up the rest.
